WHY CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH IS IMPORTANT

         Carter G. Woodson

The forerunner to Black History Month - Negro History Week, was created by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, Dr. Woodson, chose the second week of February to celebrate Negro History. This week was chosen to pay homage to the birthdays of Frederick Douglass (2/14) and Abraham Lincoln (2/12).

Is Black History Month still necessary? The short answer to that question is YES!  "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated".

The surface of Black History has barely been scratched. Although extremely relevant- there is so much more to Black History than slavery, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, and the civil rights movement.

Most of Black History is not included in history books, and it's only part of the history curriculum during the month of February. How many Black pioneers of science, education, and invention have you learned about?
